Biography

Name: Allan Palmer
Born: March 25, 1948
Location: California, USA
Disability: Various Disabilities/Illnesses - See History

Styles/Influences: Every drummer I have heard, seen, and studied with!!!

History: I got my 1st drum at age 12 for a Christmas present from a high school boy who lived 3 houses away. Hearing him playing his drums, he was into Joe Morello and Take 5 and that was what pulled me to the drums. I have played in over 25 bands in my drumming adventure. I have studied with many teachers through all the years I have played, which I will write about later.

I moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1972. I grew up in a town named Nevada, MO (it is south of Kansas City) and had my 1st rock band at age 17. I had my 1st pro gig when I was 14 at a C&W bar. The people in the bar were so very drunk & had fights so I refused to play and quit the band. I went to Blue Bear School of Waltzes in San Francisco and studied with a great teacher named Jim Reynolds (he graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music). He taught me about thumbs up grip, how to play with the bounce technique, stick control, and playing Jazz.

I became disabled at birth and live with Short Bowel Syndrone (I have only 18 inches of my small intestine). I also have Pernicious Anemia from my birth defect and I had many surgeries by the time I was 5 1/2. I also live with Scoliosis, my T4, 5, 6, 7 and 2 vertebrae are fused, Spina Bifida Diverticulitis. and PTSD (post trauma stress disorder…a stage fright thing). Bright lights and my eyes crossfire and I lose my place I feel like I am on the surgery table with the bright lights pouring on me. The first time it happened was when I was 17. I just have to be aware that bright lights can throw my concentration and focus into disray. I just watch out to try to make sure the lights don't mess me up but sometimes I don't make it.

In addition I have Sciatica/Disc bulge at L4 & L5 into S1 from an on the job" injury. I walk with a cane after being hit by a truck (again, on the day job injury) that was hit by van driven by a drunk driver.

Finally, I am now a cancer survivor who needs another surgery to remove new tumors.

I practice every day with a drum program metronome. I practice my lessons that I learned from Jim Reynolds plus all that I have learned from every one I have seen play, heard on record, and various teachers' study material. Sometimes I record myself and mix my drumming with loops. You can hear the results on my web page: www.cds1.net/~apalmer You can also hear me play drums on a version of "Sym for the Devil" with my band Shanghigh.

Finally I’d like to mention that I attended The Last Waltz at Winterland in San Francisco, CA in 1976. I got to see Ringo play!!!!!
