Biography
Name: David Batizi
Born: April 2, 1983
Location: Budapest, Hungary
Disability: Arm Birth Defect
Styles/Influences: My favourite drummers: Stewart Copeland, Marco Minnemann, Derrick McKenzie
(Jamiroquai), Vinnie Colaiuta, Balazs Tibor (he is a Hungarian drummer). My favorite musicians: Tom Kennedy (Dave Weckl Band), Gordon Sumner (Sting), Phil Collins.
History: I was born with about 4" or so missing below my elbow. I started playing the drums when I was 11 or 12 years old. First I played simple grooves with one hand holding one stick and it's not that hard to play a simple 4/4 groove with one hand on the hihat, snare and bass drum. I continued playing with one stick for about a year or so.
Then my mom and myself came up with this idea of getting a prosthesis for me that
can hold a drum stick. At that time I already had a prosthesis which looked
like a real arm but it was to heavy and too long for playing the drums and for
holding a stick. This is why a special stick holder prosthesis was made for
me. As you can see in pictures below, the prosthesis is really a basic device that just fits over the end of my arm and has the drumstick secured at the end by a few screws.
At the age of 13 I took my first drum lessons. At the same time I
started to play in a school band and we performed on a school festival. Then, later when I was 15 I started to play with other bands, mainly pop and rock music. Meanwhile, I listened a lot to Dave Weckl, Chick Corea, etc.. This
way I got into jazz and fusion music. I never actually played in a fusion
band but I really like that kind of music. At the ages of 19 and 20 I played in a couple of cover bands. We played Tower
of Power, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, Freak Power, Red Hot
Chili Peppers, U2, etc..
Now I play in a band in which we also cover songs from Nils Landgren,
Jamiroquai, Count Basic, etc.. you see, mostly funky music.
Sometimes other drummers ask me how playing with a prosthesis effects my
drumming. Well to be honest, it does not effect my drumming at all because
I grew up having no right underarm so I got used to this situation. Of
course there are a couple of things which I can not do with the right stick
(e.g. playing really fast stuff and things like that), but I try to do
everyhting like other "two handed" drummers do.
