Biography

Name: Diane Von Heyneman
Born: November 13, 1964
Location: California, USA
Disability: Multiple Sclerosis

Styles/Influences: The screaming rhythm in my brain.

History: I was born... Ok, I'll cut to the chase. I've always loved music. I'm the baby in the family so, my brother and sisters had music blaring most of the time. My parents were both musically inclined; my mom played piano, organ, and sax at home, but could play just about anything she picked up. My dad played piano and trumpet supposedly, although I never heard him play the trumpet, the thing just sat in its case looking cool.

From the influences of my siblings I was into Classic Rock and the current Rock 'N Roll of the times. At the age of 14 I was taken to the first Urgh Wars, a punk rock festival of sorts. It was my first introduction to punk and I fell in love. There's nothing better for teenage angst. Soon after, I picked up the bass guitar. Well, I've got wee little fingers and to put it bluntly, I just plain sucked. I knew I had good timing, I just couldn't get my fingers to stretch. I had thought about the drums, but between the cost and the noise I decided against it.

So, a few years passed, high school, beauty school, and work. I got the travel bug, saved up some money, stuffed my backpack and headed to Europe. I frolicked and worked my way through England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. I found myself in an Italian prison for a short stint. A simple case of guilt by association (TIP: don't hang out with people who sell hash). When I got out I bee lined it to a circle of friends I had made in Germany. One thing led to another and I got engaged. I came back to the states to see if I stilled loved him or if it was just infatuation. Well, 4 months later he came here and we got married. My daughter came a short 10 months later, unplanned, but very welcomed. Time goes by and I finally come to realize my husband's an alcoholic. I tried my darndest to help him and have our marriage work out, but to no avail. It's tough being a German alcoholic; they just don't get it; drinking is too much part of the culture. Well, I couldn't take care of two children so I had to cut him lose.

Time passes and I get diagnosed with MS in 1994. I went to a support group meeting and met Martin, who also has MS. Love grew and we got married in 1995. He adopted my daughter Ziah in 2000 (I don't know what happened to Bernd, her biological dad; not for lack of trying though). More time goes by and in 2003 I take an African drumming class. Well, one thing lead to another and now I play in an all female Blue Grass/Americana band. Go figure, I finally made it to the drums and I'm loving it. You can check out our band LilyWater at www.LilyWaterBand.com. I also play in a Celtic duo, The Allister McFish Band.

Presently my MS mostly effects my legs/feet, I use forearm crutches and sometimes AFO's. For long distances I have a small scooter. I get some weakness in my right hand occasionally , but it has not effected my playing.
