Biography

Name: Kim Rosario
Born: April 3, 1988
Location: Michigan, USA
Disability: Arthrogryprosis

Styles/Influences: Death Metal drummers such as Andy Workman of Ares Letum, Mike Justian of Unearth, Mike Smith of Suffocation, and Paul Mazurkiewicz of Cannibal Corpse.

History: I was born on April 3rd, 1988 in Pontiac Michigan. When I was born my legs and arms were stuck to my chest so instantly the doctors new something was terribly wrong. They did exploratory surgery to see what was wrong and found that I had a disability known as Arthrogryposis. It affects a person's joints and ligaments, causing joint fusion so the elbows and knees are stuck in one position. I would live life with no muscle tone in my chest, back, arms, and legs, and the doctors said my disability would render my legs useless and my arms would have almost no movement at all.

Fast forward to the good stuff to when I was 6; I saw drums on TV and fell in love but put them in the back of my mind because I thought I would never play. For a minute I thought my life would go unwritten because a crucial part of my life was missing: DRUMS; so I depressingly closed that chapter of my life. Fast forward another 10 years and I'm in middle school. I start playing toms for my high school band but that still wasn't enough. After I saw the Black Dahlia Murder's video for "Funeral Thirst", when I saw their former drummer Cory Grady do the fill right before the first bridge I instantly new drums weren't a want for me; they were a passion that would follow my every move, so I had to get into full on drumming.

My independent support coordinator hooked me up with a set of Sound Percussion drums, a standard 4 piece rock set. I have no use of my left arm, so I played one handed for about 3 months. Then as a joke, I put the other drumstick in my mouth to fill in for my left hand, and it stuck and I've played like that every since. I also don't have much ability to grip the stick in my right hand without assistance, so I use 2 wrist bands around my wrist below my thumb that I slide the stick through to help me hang on. I played the set for a year learning standard rock beats, jazz grooves and blues. After this time period I wanted to play death metal so I bought a PDP DP402L double bass pedal converted for left foot primary kick operation. My friend Anthony hooked me up with nice Sabian AA Fusion Hi-hats and I bought a Wuhan china cymbal. I tune my snare to a nice mid crack with good sustain and my toms excessively low for the brooding metal sound I love. My bass drum is tuned nice n high with a pillow, muting it for nice flat hits. I use attack style beaters instead of ball beaters because attack beaters hit in one specific area were as a big ball shaped felt beater has more surface area.

Finding drums was the best thing that happened to me because I am growing muscle in my chest, back and calves. Because I love playing drums I don't even think I'm doing therapy so it works for me as well as my mom and physical therapist.

My influences are mainly death metal drummers such as Andy Workman of Ares Letum, Mike Justian of Unearth, Mike Smith of Suffocation, and Paul Mazurkiewicz of Cannibal Corpse. The reason I chose these drummers is not their choice of music; instead, how they play each is very distinguished in their blast beats triplets and quads, and Paul of Cannibal Corpse with his gravity beats.

Other than that there's really nothing else to say except that if you truly love doing something and live for it, don't take anyone else's opinion before you try it yourself. If you don't try yourself you won't know how well you can succeed. I myself don't have a disability. I took one look at it, kicked it in the bread basket and said this is MY life. Live to the fullest or don't live at all.
