Biography

Name: Laurie Hollister
Born: May 28, 1978
Location: Illinois, USA
Disability: Multiple Sclerosis

Styles/Influences: I listen to a little bit of everything from Iron Maiden to Diana Krall, but the artisits that influnced my drumming the most are Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Creed, and about 1000 others.

History: I have been drumming on and off for about 12 years. I taught myself basic drum patterns when I was a teen, but I had to put down the sticks for almost 7 years while life happened (got married, had 2 kids, etc.) My husband actually encouraged me to get back into drumming, and I am actually the best I have ever been as a drummer, with my current band, MS, and all!

I found out I had MS in October 2006. after my ENTIRE left side went numb. I thought I was having a stroke and so did the doctors. The feeling gradually came back, but I was suffering all kinds of symptoms: blurred vision out of my left eye, profound weakness, and lack of feeling in my left arm and hand, exhaustion, mental 'fuzzyness", etc.. It took about eleven tests, and 3 Doctors to figure out what I had and what to do about it. In March I was feeling better and started an exercise and diet regimine that seems to be helping me quite a bit, and in April I joined my band, "That Girl Band".

I have relapse/remitting MS, that thank God is in remission right now. My symptoms are very minimal for MS because of the remission, but I still tire very easily, get confused at times, and my left side is MUCH weaker than my right, along with my left hand being completely numb.

As for drumming, I REFUSE to let this stop me. Am I the best technical drummer? No, but I would bet you'd be hard pressed to find one who enjoys it more. I really have to work to compensate for my left hand not having the dextarity it should, but I try to make up for it by 1/2 timing and making my right do double duty. I have found that LIGHT sticks (7A) and gloves are essential for keeping sticks from flying out of my hands. Also, moving my set-up and having a SMALLER KIT helps me transition smoothly.

If you want it bad enough, you can do it. You never know what tomorrow will bring.
