Biography
Name: Sharon Lokes
Born: March 27, 1964
Location: Nottingham, UK
Disability: Damaged Radial Nerve/"Drop Wrist"
Styles/Influences: Rock, Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Richard Marx, Cher, Phil Collins, Green Day, Bob Seger, and Alice Cooper. I am just getting into some of the newer bands now too like Bullets & Octane, Lordi, Aiden, and Keane.
History: I have been drumming for two & a half years. I had my first drum lesson on my 40th birthday and I have never looked back. I
absolutely love drumming. I have always wanted to drum, but due to family and work commitments I never had the chance to do
it. I take lessons on a weekly basis with a professional tutor. I was in a band for 6 months which helped my techniques &
timing no end, but unfortunately it fell apart, as sometimes these things do. I am currently looking to join another band or
possibly set up my own. All I want to do is have fun & one day entertain people with my skills.
I have a damaged right Radial Nerve. This basically translates to my right hand not being able to open (In a relaxed fist all
of the time). My grip is weak and the only finger I can use on my right hand is the index, the thumb does not work at all; I
have what is commonly known as "drop wrist".
This all came about after a simple trip off a curb, taking my weight on my outstretched arms to break my fall and fracturing
my elbow in March of this year. The fracture was fine, what caused the damage was intense cramping of the forearm muscles a
few days after the event. This lasted for a period of 24 hours and was agony. The muscles actually crushed the nerve. I woke
up the following morning unable to open my hand. I have very recently had surgery on my forearm/elbow to see if the nerve
damage can be reversed. It is now a waiting game with physio and occupational therapy and patience to see if any function
returns to the hand.
As for drumming, my disability will never stop me. I do have problems with my drumming due to this though. I have a habit of throwing sticks around my practice area and never knowing where they are going to land. My right forearm muscles get tight thus making me get tired quicker. Speed is a real issue too but to get over this problem with the hi-hats; If it is a fairly fast bmp in 1/8th notes I cut it back to 1/4 notes so I am not over working my right arm, but ensure it is in keeping with the song being performed.
If you have a dream, live it. You never know what is around the corner.
