Biography

Name: Shawn Wells
Born: March 6, 1980
Location: West Virgina, USA
Disability: Amnyoplasia Congenita

Styles/Influences: Lars Ulrich, Neil Peart, David Silveria, Michael Portnoy, John Tempesta, Keith Moon, Tommy Aldrige, Vinne Paul, John Bohnam, and Rick Allen.

History: My name is Shawn Wells. I am 26 years old and I am from Oceana West virginia, now living in Beckley West Virginia. I started playing drums at the age of 3. My mom bought me a little indian bongo drum and I played that thing until I busted a hole in it, then I went to pots and pans; so my love for drums started at an early age. She finally realized "Hey I need to buy that boy a drum set".

My disability is called Amnyoplasia Congenita. It is a birth defect that affects the joints, but it never stopped me from doing what I love doing, playing drums. My influences are Lars Ulrich, Neil Peart, David Silveria, Michael Portnoy, John Tempesta, Keith Moon, Tommy Aldrige, Vinne Paul, John Bohnam, and Rick Allen. I play rock mostly, but I have played in a praise and worship team in church, and alot of garage bands with my friends. Right now i am in a Country/Southern rock band, called "Southern Rain". We play around Beckley, and Oak Hill.

The thing that I wished I had thought of ten years ago is my drumstick idea. My hands curve under a bit; I can grip but not really really tight and because having to hold the stick a little tighter and being paranoid of one of them flying out, I created my own stick. It's nothing fancy as I don't have the money to get the materials I need to make the actual stick, or to even get a patent, but its ok. With my stick I take a piece of tape and lay it long ways but I make it so there is a wave in it, then I tape the top ends down and I slip my thumbs through the holes, and there ya go. There are no sticks flying out of my hands no matter how sweaty my hands get and I still have good stick work.

My kit is a Tama Rockstar Custom. Before I got with Southern Rain I had a set of Maxwins; they were old and didn't sound very good, so the lead singer's dad said that I was too good of a drummer to be playing that kit, so he bought me a set of Tama's off a buddy of his. Tama's are my favorite; ever since i was a kid I always wantesd a set of them, but I don't own these so I'm still waiting *lol*.

I have always wanted to go in a studio and lay down some drum tracks, but I never have gotten a chance to. Being from West Virginia you really don't get noticed at all, but I am hoping one day to play drums for a living and let people see that you should never let anything stop you from doing what you love. Even if i am just a studio drummer it doesn't matter to me, just as long as I am playing drums.
