BiographyName: Aaron Mathews
Styles/Influences: Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative), Lars Ulrich (Metallica) Nikko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Mike Bordin (Ozzy), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Carl Davies (Tom Thumb and formerly King's Gate). History: I was born in New Hartford, New York. At one year of age, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). When I was eight, we moved to Phoenix, Arizona. I began "tapping" on everything with drumsticks! It was around 15 years of age that my "tapping" began to be "patterned" and "steady". At the age of 19, my father (a drummer/guitarist/singer of 25 years) was diagnosed with esophigial cancer, which took him a year later at age 41. I moved back to to New York to live/reunite with my mom. It was at this time (age 20) that my desire to play was intense. My mom bought me my first kit, a Yamaha Electric DrumKit. I blistered it within six months, at which time I traded it in toward the kit I still perform with today, a Tama Rockstar RK! I play the drums from my wheelchair and because of limited hip movement, I have my double pedal and remote hihat pedal positioned right next to each other, with the snare off to my left (check out my drum diagram). Since I started playing, I have performed with several bands (predominantly rock/metal). Though I rarely admit to it, I have also played country music (til my wife left me, took the truck, the dog....!!!!) My most challenging "gig" was my time playing in the group in my church (I am Christian....). My main influences include Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative), Lars Ulrich (Metallica) Nikko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Mike Bordin (Ozzy), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Carl Davies (friend and drummer with Tom Thumb and formerly King's Gate). Bands that I listen to include, outside of those mentioned, include The Beatles, The Used, Korn, Evanescence, Disturbed, Godsmack, Sevendust, System of a Down, etc. The list is endless! My favorite Christian bands/influences include (and all are metal) Deliverance, Ultimatum (Hey Scott!!!!!), Tourniquet, Corpse, Michelle Deneen, Third Day, The Supertones, Mortification, and yes, even Stryper!!!!!! Currently, I am playing in "NOD" (along with my buds, Pete(guitas) and Kerry Daly(keys/vocals)), a melodic metal band doing all original music. I teach private lessons in my home "studio". Also, I will begin studying at The Collective (the east coast's equivalent to PIT!), and I have been in the process of attaining endorsements with Tama and Zildjian.
