History: I suppose my history of drum playing is a little short. But I will dive deeper and write about my history of musical involvement altogether. I have always been into music. Even when I was young, I had an appreciation for music that was down-right sick. Whatever I was doing, it'd be with Guns'N'Roses. They were my first favorite band, and for good reasons. They were a hell of a band; extremely talented. I would always envision myself being successful in that sort of thing and dance in front of the mirror, pretending to be them. What great dreams...

Fast forward to December 22, 1999, my eighth grade year. My father's cousin came over for a random visit and started talking about guitar. Me being heavily into music, I was interested. So I asked if he wouldn't mind letting me use one. He offered to take me to his house and let me try it out. He let me play a Gibson, and I was sold. He allowed me to borrow it with an older amp he had; So began my guitar career.

In the beginning, I practiced guitar at a pace that would make me look insane. Every day after school, I'd come home and just play. On the weekends I'd play all day long. The success would be quickly cut short.

I was out snowmobiling with my friends, and I was coming to the house when one of my buddies came out from behind a huge pine tree. I didn't see him, and had no time to even react. I hit the side of his machine and I was flown about thirty feet on to my head, hyper extending my neck, and severely bruising both of my upper legs. Little did I know then, that I had severely injured nerves in my Breakial Plexus.

I had no pain, so I didn't think anything of it. It was about that time when I really got into drums. My cousin purchased a kit and it got to the point where I played it more than him. He then allowed me to move it into my own room, so I could play whenever I wanted; and damn, I played a lot.

It was at that time I noticed something odd with my left hand. It was uncharacteristically weak. I wasn't able to stretch fingers like I used to, move them as fast, or bend strings on my guitar. At first I sluffed it off for a strain, and didn't think of it much. But as time wore on, I became more and more concerned. My guitar skills were going down the toilet, and drumming was becoming more of a pain in the ass than an enjoyable hobby. It was time to get this thing checked out.

It turns out that I stretched numerous nerves in my neck that affect my hand tremendously. My nerves were so bottled up with scar tissue that the signals from my brain weren't getting to my hand. The three major nerves that run into my hand are all affected. The scar tissue has created muscle atrophy, loss of function, and a large amount of strength loss. I think I had never felt so low in so long after I left the doctors office that day.

I went home and plopped on my bed and wondered how I was going to accomplish my dreams with the handicap that I have. But it's that same thought that made me realize that my talent is even more special becuase I have this handicap. I won't give up until I'm dead!
